Speak word in loop (to help learn it)

As discussed in @Nathan Hanes post…

I would like to be able to listen to a single word (or short phrase) on repeat to help me learn the pronunciation.

I think the easiest way to implement this given your current structure would be…

  1. Long press on the text to get the context menu for an entire paragraph.

  2. Click on "Edit Text". To open the selectable text window.

  3. Double tap on the word you want to learn to highlight it.

  4. Single tap on the highlighted word to get the context menu for the highlighted word.

  5. Click on the ">" to extend the context menu.

  6. This displays the "> Speak" option which just speaks the highlighted word. See attached image

In this menu you could add a "> Speak(loop)" option which would repeat the highlighted word until you were happy with it. You would also need a way of stopping the loop, but just tapping on the page outside the context menu could do that.

This would work but is complicated for the user (7 clicks)

A solution I would prefer (but I know would be a lot harder to implement and would radically alter your context menus) would be as follows (3 clicks)…

  1. Get rid of the current long press for context menu.

  2. Implement text selection. Long press to select a word (after which you can drag the markers to make it a multi word selection).

  3. Single tap on the selected text to open the context menu.

  4. The context menu could include the current options but also the speak options, eg…

  • Copy

  • Share

  • Add bookmark

  • Download audio

  • Edit text

  • Lookup

  • Translate

  • Search web

  • Speak

  • Speak(loop)

  • Spell

Thanks

Screenshot of where “play in loop” could be placed in current structure…

Screenshot of how another reader does this. This would be my preferred solution, selecting text in the reading, listening, or translation mode and then getting a context menu. Your context menu would have more options than this though…
